Government support
Government funding is available for apprenticeship training.
The government provides £1,000 for your business when you have an apprentice that is:
- aged 16 to 18 years old
- aged 19 to 24, who is a care leaver or has an Education, Health and Care Plan for a learning difficulty or disability
The government also provides funding to upskill apprentices in maths and English. This means you do not have to set entry requirements in English and maths and can upskill your existing apprentices.
Further funding to support apprenticeships may be available from your local government.
Employer national insurance contributions
Businesses do not have to pay employer national insurance contributions for apprentices aged up to 25 if they earn under £50,270 per year.
If you do not pay the Apprenticeship Levy
Businesses that do not pay the Apprenticeship Levy, will pay a maximum of 5% of the apprenticeship training costs.
If you employ fewer than 50 employees, the government will pay 100% of the apprenticeship training costs (up to the funding band maximum) for apprentices aged:
- 16 to 18
- 19 to 24 with an education, health and care plan provided by their local authority or has been in the care of their local authority

If you do pay the Apprenticeship Levy
You pay the Apprenticeship Levy if you’re an employer with a pay bill over £3 million each year.

More financial support
If your business is registered with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), you can access additional grants and your apprentices can get support with travel and accommodation.
