Sector-based Work Academy Programme (SWAP)

A sector-based work academy programme (SWAP) gives jobseekers who are 16 and over, and claiming benefits, the opportunity to apply for jobs.

This programme can last up to 6 weeks and includes:

  • pre-employment training, matched to your business sector and delivered by you or a local training provider
  • a short work placement with your business
  • a guaranteed job interview or help with your application process

A SWAP is a partnership between your business, Jobcentre Plus and a training provider. Responsibility for delivering this programme is shared between these partners. You will be supported by a single point of contact from the Jobcentre who will help you find potential candidates.

You can work with other businesses in your sector to offer SWAP opportunities and fill multiple job vacancies.

Benefits for your business

Offering a SWAP can:

  • give you the opportunity to see if an individual is suited to a role within your business
  • help you to recruit staff with the right training and skills through tailored pre-employment training
  • give you access to a large pool of candidates through your single point of contact

Cost

This programme is fully funded by the government. You may have your own business costs, such as time spent training and supervising.

There is other financial support available from the jobcentre for programme participants such as reimbursing travel costs, and workwear and tools in some cases.

Talk to the Jobcentre to find out more about the financial support available.

Your responsibilities

If your business offers a SWAP, you will need to:

  • have a current job vacancy that you are trying to fill
  • give participants a guaranteed job interview or help with the application process
  • provide a safe working environment

Participants will need support through a line manager, supervisor, or mentor. They will also need an induction, which includes explaining relevant policies and procedures.

The line management and induction can be offered by any of the SWAP partners, such as your business, the Jobcentre or training provider, depending on availability and resource.
